There is one number worth memorizing: 60 to 66 inches from the floor to the center of the fixture. That is standard sconce height, it works in most rooms, and it is where the fixture lands slightly above the eye level of a standing adult — high enough that you do not look into the bulb, low enough that the light reaches the room rather than washing the ceiling.
Every other rule on this page is a departure from that one, and each departure has a reason.
The standard: 60 to 66 inches, measured to the center
Measure to the center of the fixture, not the bracket and not the bottom. Designers and electricians differ by an inch or two — some work to 60, some to 66, some split it at 63 — and the honest answer is that anything in that band looks right. Below 58 inches a sconce starts to read as a nightlight; above 70 it lights the ceiling and leaves faces in shadow.
Two adjustments to the standard:
- Tall ceilings. Above 9 feet, raise the sconce a few inches so it stays in proportion — roughly 66 to 72 inches for a 10-foot ceiling. The fixture should sit around two-thirds of the way up the wall, not marooned at chest height under a vast expanse of paint.
- Where the light is aimed. A sconce that throws light down wants to be a little higher. One that throws up, or both ways, can sit lower without glare.
How far apart should wall sconces be
For a rhythm along a wall or a hallway, space sconces 6 to 8 feet apart. Closer than 6 and the pools of light merge into a wash with no shape; further than 10 and you get visible dark gaps between them.
Work from the ends inward, not from one end along. Measure the wall, decide how many fixtures it takes, then divide the wall evenly so the gap at each end is half the gap between fixtures. A hallway with three evenly spaced sconces and a short gap at each end looks intentional. The same three starting flush at one end and running out of wall looks like a mistake, because it is one.
Beside a bed
Bedside sconces are the most common use and the one with the most variables, because the answer depends on whether you read in bed.
- For reading: the bottom of the shade should sit roughly at or just above shoulder height when you are sitting up — usually 40 to 48 inches from the floor, which is well below the 60-inch standard. The light needs to fall on the page, not on the top of your head. - For ambience only: stay at the standard 60 to 66 inches and let it wash the wall.
- Horizontally: center each sconce over its nightstand, or 6 to 10 inches out from each side of the bed frame if there is no table.
Hardwired bedside sconces need a box in the right place, which is exactly where most bedrooms do not have one. This is the case where a battery fixture wins outright — see below.
Beside a mirror or vanity
Sconces flanking a mirror light a face evenly from both sides, which is the reason they beat a single fixture above it. Mount them at 60 to 66 inches — roughly eye level for the person using the mirror — and 36 to 40 inches apart, which usually means just outside each edge of the mirror.
Use a diffused shade rather than an exposed bulb, and stay warm to neutral: 2700K to 3000K. A mirror lit by two bare bulbs at 5000K is unflattering in a way that is difficult to fix afterwards.
One caution: sconces in a bathroom must be rated for damp locations, and placement near a tub or shower is governed by electrical code. That is a question for an electrician, not a blog post.
Flanking artwork
A pair of sconces on either side of a large piece lights it from both sides with no glare off the glass — often better than a picture light for glazed work. Mount them level with the vertical center of the piece, and far enough out that the beams cross in front of it rather than raking the frame. In a hallway
Hallways are where sconces do their best work, because a single ceiling fixture in a corridor produces exactly the tunnel effect you do not want: bright in the middle, dark at both ends. Sconces every 6 to 8 feet at 60 to 66 inches light the walls and make a narrow hallway read wider.
In a hallway under 40 inches wide, projection matters more than height. A sconce that sticks 8 inches off the wall is something you will hit with your shoulder. When the sconce runs on a battery
Every rule above assumes you can put the fixture where the rule says. With a hardwired sconce you usually cannot: the box is where the builder put it, and moving it is an electrician's job.
A battery-powered sconce removes that constraint completely. There is no box, so the correct height is the height you mount at — 44 inches beside a bed for reading, 63 in a hallway, wherever the wall and the furniture actually want it. Common mistakes
- Measuring to the bracket. The number is to the center of the fixture.
- Standard height beside a bed. 60 inches is too high to read by. Drop it.
- Spacing from one end. Divide the wall evenly and leave a half-gap at each end.
- Deep fixtures in a narrow hallway. Check the projection figure.
- Mismatched heights on one wall. Sconces in a row must all be at the same height, even if the furniture below them is not.
- Marking the wall before living with it. Tape a paper template at the height you think you want and leave it a day.
Sixty to sixty-six inches to the center, six to eight feet apart, lower beside a bed. Once those are in your head the rest is choosing the fixture — start with the wall sconce range, or alabaster and travertine if you want the light diffused through stone.
