How to Light Artwork When There's No Outlet Nearby

A framed print on an unlit wall is furniture. The same print with a light over it is the thing people look at when they walk in. Galleries have known this forever, which is why every serious piece in one has its own light — and why the rest of us hang art in rooms where the nearest outlet is eleven feet away behind a sofa.

You do not need that outlet. Rechargeable picture lights have made the whole problem go away, and the rules for getting one right are short.

What size picture light do you need

The working rule: the light should be roughly half to two-thirds the width of the frame, measured frame edge to frame edge, not the canvas.

  • 24-inch frame → a 12 to 16 inch light
  • 36-inch frame → 18 to 24 inches
  • 48-inch frame → 24 to 32 inches

Undersizing is the more common error and the more visible one. Too small a light puts a bright oval in the middle of the picture and lets the corners fall away — the effect everyone recognizes as "badly lit" without being able to say why.

Getting the beam to cover the whole frame

Width alone does not do it. The light has to sit far enough off the wall that its beam opens out before it reaches the canvas, and it has to be aimed down at the right angle. This is what the arm is for. On an adjustable swing arm you move the head closer to the wall for a shallow frame or further out for a deep one, and you can see the difference on the picture as you do it.

The gallery convention is to aim at roughly 30 degrees from vertical. Steeper and the frame casts a shadow across its own top edge; shallower and you get glare bouncing straight off the glass into the eyes of anyone standing in front of it.

If the piece is behind glass, glare is the thing to solve first. Stand where people will actually stand, then adjust the arm until the reflection of the lamp head moves out of your sightline.

How high above the frame

Mount the light so the body sits a few inches above the top of the frame — close enough that the beam covers the picture, far enough that the fixture is not touching it. On most frames that puts the bracket 4 to 6 inches above the top edge.

Some picture lights are made to fix to the frame itself rather than the wall. That works for a heavy, solid frame and is a genuinely good renter option since it puts no holes in anything, but it is not for a stretched canvas without a rigid frame — the light will pull the top edge forward.

Color temperature for art

This matters more than people expect, because the light changes the colors in the piece.

  • 2700K to 3000K (warm) — for oil paintings, wood-toned work, sepia and anything warm. It flatters skin tones and earth pigments.
  • 3500K to 4000K (neutral) — for photography, monochrome, ink and architectural drawings, where you want whites to read white and not cream.
  • 5000K and above — almost never. It makes the paper look blue and the room look clinical.

A fixture with three selectable color temperatures, like the swing-arm light above, lets you try the piece under each one and keep the one that suits it. That is worth more than guessing at purchase time, because the right answer depends on the artwork and on the color of the wall behind it.

Battery life, and what the numbers mean

The swing-arm light carries a 5000 mAh cell and dims from 20 to 100 percent by remote, with a timer that switches it off after a set run. Those three facts interact, and the interaction is the whole story of living with a cordless fixture:

  • Run any battery light at 100 percent all evening and you will be recharging it constantly.
  • Art almost never wants full output. A picture light at 30 to 40 percent looks better than one at 100, because the point is to lift the piece off the wall, not to floodlight it.
  • The timer is what makes it practical — set it for the hours you are actually in the room and the fixture stops burning charge at 2 a.m.

Run it dim, on a timer, and charging becomes an occasional chore rather than a weekly one. The head lifts off its bracket to charge, so the bracket stays on the wall.

Mounting it in a rental

The bracket takes screws or adhesive pads. On smooth painted drywall the pads hold a light fixture of this weight without a single hole — clean the wall with isopropyl alcohol, press firmly for 30 seconds, and leave it an hour before hanging the light. What else can light a picture

A dedicated picture light is the clean answer, but not the only one. A pair of wall sconces flanking a large piece lights it from both sides and removes the glare problem entirely — see wall sconce height and spacing for where to put them. Common mistakes

  • A light too small for the frame. The single most visible error. Measure the frame, take half.
  • Aiming straight down. Produces a shadow from the frame's own top edge across the top of the picture.
  • Ignoring glare on glazed work. Check the view from where people stand, not from directly underneath.
  • Cool white on a warm painting. Kills the pigments it is meant to show off.
  • Full brightness. Looks harsh, flattens the surface and drains the battery.
